The MONALISA (MONitoring and Assessing prevention and restoration soLutIons to combat desertification) project, funded under the Horizon Europe program, was successfully launched on September 1, 2024. The project kicked off from October 1-3, 2024, in Sassari, Italy, hosted by the coordinating institution, Università degli Studi di Sassari (UNISS).

MONALISA addresses the urgent issue of Land Degradation and Desertification (LDD) in Mediterranean drylands. The project consortium, consisting of 20 partners from nine countries, includes leading research institutions, SMEs, NGOs, and public authorities.

The project will assess and implement tailored solutions, such as adaptive grazing systems, microbial-based solutions, conservation agriculture, and the reuse of treated wastewater, across six Mediterranean case studies in Spain, Tunisia, Italy (with two case studies), Greece, and Palestine. During the Kick-off Meeting, consortium partners together with stakeholders visited the case study site in Berchidda, Italy, where innovative grazing systems will be implemented as part of the project’s efforts.

Over the next four years, MONALISA will focus on developing sustainable practices to combat LDD. The project will also foster new business opportunities and promote environmental sustainability across Mediterranean drylands. By integrating advanced technologies such as remote sensing and AI, MONALISA aims to provide innovative solutions for LDD challenges.
